Learning to sail is one of the most satisfying and fulfilling activities a child can do. 

Sailing is such an incredibly versatile sport, it can be enjoyed by young & old, at adrenalin pumping levels through racing or as an avenue to enjoy a lazy Sunday afternoon.

The Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club is proud to introduce the nationally accredited “Tackers” junior sailing program for kids which offers children aged from 7-12 years sequential skill & knowledge development through three main courses/levels each involving 20 hours of tuition.

Tackers 1 – Having Fun

Tackers 2 – Tricks & Techniques

Tackers 3 – Sailing Fast!

In Tackers 1 – “Having Fun” kids sail in pairs, meet new friends and are introduced to the basics of sailing and the marine environment. The course is all about “having fun” and getting out on the water. The children will learn boat handling skills, about safety & rules as well as sailing theory.

The program has been specifically designed to keep children engaged with short but interesting activities and games where kids have fun whilst learning solid sailing skills and habits without even noticing!

The Tackers 1 course is offered as an 8-week after school activity or weekend morning activity.  We also offer a 5-day school holiday program.  See our schedulled activites to the left of your screen or check out the COURSE DATES on our website

The course fee of $290.00 includes the following:

• 20hours of instruction by Australian Sailing qualified Instructors & Assistant Instructors
• Use of our Tackers OziOpti boats and equipment
• Use of a child’s PFD/life jacket during the course
• A Tackers Pack which for Tackers 1 includes:
  • light blue Tackers shirt
  • Tackers water bottle
  • Tackers cap
• Weekly home activity sheets
• BBQ sausage sizzle on the final day
• Certificate of Completion
