Perry Sandhills

Old Renmark Road , Wentworth NSW 2648
Description

The four hundred acres of rollong red sandhills are geolically traceable to the Barkindji Aboriginal people and the last Ice Age (approx. 40,000 years ago).  Fossils of Australia’s giant mega-fauna (Large bear animal, Huge Kangaroo, Marsupial Lion, Giant emu, and giant goanna have been located at the Perry Sandhills. Replicas of the mega-fauna can be viewed at the Pioneer Museum in Wentworth.  The dunes are also home to a Murray River Red Gum that is believed to be over 500 years old.  The sand over time has completely covered the trunk (approx. 20 feet) and you find yourself standing in the canopy of the tree.  Be sure to investigate the awesome red sandhills as they are a perfect location for a family barbecue or outing.  The feeling of sand between your toes carries a whole new meaning when you plunge down the rolling red sands for some great family fun!  Sand boards can also be hired from Jades Gallery in Wentworth to use on the sandhills for those even more adventurous.  And a visit to the Perry Sand Hills is FREE!
